It's tough being a fence in Montana

So, really, under the current conditions, how does a good fence keep cattle in, or elk out, or anything else? Once  the snow drifts over the fence, it doesn't seem much like the fence is a barrier.

If we didn't think we were in the Magic Kingdom before, maybe this morning convinced us.  We were on our longest cross country ski up at the top of the valley.  Nobody else around.  It was 21 degrees, overcast, and windy, and we were working pretty hard.  Betsy's cell phone rings so we take a little breather to answer. Jill, from the B Bar ranch which we can see down below, has happened to call us to ask if we would like any fresh radishes!  She grows fresh vegetables in an amazing wood fire heated greenhouse for the gourmet meals for guests at the B Bar ranch, and has enough fresh radishes to sell.  So down we go to the B Bar, after our ski, and tour the greenhouse with her- lettuce, and kale, and dill, and spinach, and basil, and beets and tomato seedlings, mesclun, mustard greens, turnips.  This is in February at 6000 feet in the snow filled Tom Miner Basin!!! So we came home with some fresh veggies!
Off to Yellowstone this afternoon.  We will be on duty here at the ranch Thursday through Sunday, as Matt will be away.  We' re hoping any calves are born today, or after Sunday!! We'll be doing night checks through the pastures at 10 PM and 2 AM each night. Yikes!
