34 hours to go till Matt comes back! Wow, it sure is hard to imagine after two days of this how he manages 60 days of it by himself every year!! Our checks every three hours for calving went more quietly last night. But, about 12:45, coming back from the willows, the most distant spot we travel to, where the cows wander off to once or twice each day seeking a little water, Betsy said "Wait!" She was sweeping the far fenceline with the spotlight looking for loner cows who may be in labor. So I stopped the Gator. There, in the beam of the light, by where hay had been spread for the cattle to feed on at 7 AM the previous morning, were six big white jackrabbits, sitting up, PLAYING POKER!!
Well, that's what it looked like to me. Sorry no photo from that pitch dark surround to share with you, so you can't verify it. One's eyes do begin to imagine things surrounded by that much pitch dark, that much snow, and that time of night. The gang of jack rabbits were real, but maybe my interpretation was a bit fanciful.
By 5:40 AM this morning, after our third night check, I kept saying to myself "You just do what you have to do". Then I thought, "Hey wait a minute, who says we have to do this??" Maybe the maxim is " You just do what you wanna do" Naw, that isn't such good advice to raise your kids on. Can we settle for "You just do what you choose to do, but try to do it right."
There, wisdom such as it is from this sleep deprived soul. Maybe starting tomorrow afternoon or Monday morning these posts will begin to make more sense.
